About Sri Lanka Alms (piṇḍapāta): A Talk On Piṇḍapāta With Video Footage
Here we talk about what it is like to go for alms in Sri Lanka versus other countries. Several pictures and videos of actual alms are shown.
Any country can be modified to go individually and get the proper proportions of food, but often in Myanmar, it is a group activity. I feel blessed to be able to experience the alms in Sri Lanka, and how I'm able to help people make merit while making merit myself. Piṇḍapāta is a great experience for the monk life. I hope you can benefit from this talk.

A Promise For The Future

In this video, I speak about the determinations made during chanting to only follow the Triple Gem as a refuge and no other. This is a determination not only for life, but for the end of Samsara. In the end, I use the power of my own story as a Western Monk and how it is definitely likely that I have made such oaths before, using the power of logic. I recently found this DVD and extracted the MP4 from it. Then I extracted the "story" of how I became a monk. This is actually old information if you have been following my posts. However, this is from 20 years ago. It gives a glimpse of what the kuti was like and how I was at the time. At the very end, I was so grateful to the fact that I made it as a monk that I began to cry. However, the int...

    Hello ven. Bhante. Is it forbidden according to vinaya, having wooden bowls? I´ve reas that clay and iron are allowed and "noble" material like tin, gold, silver are forbidden. I didn´t find anything mentioning wood. Could you help me with this? Thank you and may contentment follow you 🙏

    • @BhanteSubhuti
      @BhanteSubhuti 11 днів тому

      Yes, wooden bowls are not allowed. You can find the story easily in The Buddhist Monastic Code II Displaying psychic powers. In AN III.61, the Buddha tells a brahman that many hundreds of his bhikkhu disciples are endowed with psychic powers. Nevertheless, he forbade them from displaying those powers to householders. The origin story to this prohibition - which we cited briefly in connection with Pc 8 - shows why: Now at that time a costly block of sandalwood, from sandalwood heartwood, accrued to the Rājagaha financier. The thought occurred to him, "What if I were to have an alms bowl carved from this block of sandalwood? The chips will be for my own enjoyment, and I'll give the bowl as a gift." So the financier, having had a bowl carved from the block of sandalwood, having looped a string around it, having hung 120Misbehavior Chapter 10 it from the top of a bamboo pole, having had the bamboo pole fastened on top of a series of bamboo poles, one on top of another, announced: "Any brahman or contemplative who is a worthy one (arahant) with psychic powers: Fetch down the bowl and it is given to you." Then Pūraṇa Kassapa went to the Rājagaha financier and, on arrival, said to him, "Because I am a worthy one with psychic powers, give me the bowl." "If, venerable sir, you are a worthy one with psychic powers, fetch down the bowl and it is given to you." Then Makkali Gosāla ... Ajita Kesakambalin ... Pakudha Kaccāyana ... Sañjaya Belaṭṭhaputta ... Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta went to the Rājagaha financier and, on arrival, said to him, "Because I am a worthy one with psychic powers, give me the bowl." "If, venerable sir, you are a worthy one with psychic powers, fetch down the bowl and it is given to you." Now at that time Ven. Mahā Moggallāna and Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja, each having dressed early in the morning, each taking his robes and bowl, had gone into Rājagaha for alms. Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja was a worthy one with psychic powers, and Ven. Mahā Moggallāna was a worthy one with psychic powers (§). Then Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja said to Ven. Mahā Moggallāna: "Go, friend Moggallāna, and fetch down the bowl. That bowl is yours." Then Ven. Mahā Moggallāna said to Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja: "Go, friend Bhāradvāja, and fetch down the bowl. That bowl is yours." So Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja, rising up into the sky, took the bowl and circled three times around Rājagaha. Now at that time the Rājagaha financier was standing in his house compound with his wife and children, paying homage with his hands palm- to-palm over his heart, (saying,) "May Master Bhāradvāja land right here in our house compound." So Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja landed in the financier's house compound. Then the financier, having taken the bowl from Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja's hand, having filled it with costly non-staple foods, presented it to Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja. Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja, taking the bowl, returned to the monastery. People, hearing that "Master Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja, they say, has fetched down the financier's bowl," followed right after him, making a shrill noise, a great noise. The Blessed One, hearing the shrill noise, the great noise, asked Ven. Ānanda, "Ānanda, what is that shrill noise, that great noise?" "Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja has fetched down the Rājagaha financier's bowl, venerable sir. People, hearing that 'Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja, they say, has fetched down the bowl of the financier,' are following right after him, making a shrill noise, a great noise. That is the shrill noise, the great noise, that the Blessed One (hears)." Then the Blessed One, with regard to this cause, to this incident, had the Community of bhikkhus convened and questioned Ven. Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja: "Is it true, as they say, Bhāradvāja, that you fetched down the financier's bowl?" 121Buddhist Monastic Code 2 "Yes, venerable sir." The Awakened One, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "It's not appropriate, Bhāradvāja, not fitting for a contemplative, improper, and not to be done. How can you display a superior human state, a wonder of psychic power, to lay people for the sake of a miserable wooden bowl? Just as a woman might expose her sexual organ for the sake of a miserable wooden coin, so too have you displayed a superior human state, a wonder of psychic power, to lay people for the sake of a miserable wooden bowl." - Cv.V.8

Both Thailand and Sri Lanka also have Myanmar traditions as well.

    It's really inspiring watching this VDO. Judging from the accent of the interviewer at the inception of the clip, I guess he's either a Thai a or Laos person. Most of us, Buddhists; being Thai, Laos, or whatever nationality, are like the people who look after other people's cows helping the owner to count the number of his cows and milk them often but never get the taste of that milk. Or it can be compared to a ladle that soak in the pot full of curry but never know the taste of that curry. So are we in regard to the experience of the fruit accruing from practising of the Buddha's teaching.😊

      Especially in the present day of our society, people become more and more money centred and seem to forget everything ethical. The teaching of the Buddha seems to fade away from the land which once taken to be the hub of Buddhism but at the same time it's starting to be blossoming in the western lands.😊

    I'm a traditional Buddhist from Myanmar but never really cared much about religion.All those were just mere traditions and customs for me. Until I had an NDE a few months ago. I wont go full detail into it, but I felt the Samsara at the moment.(Felt is the best way I can describe) I really have no words for it. But since then, i no longer had any doubts samsara anymore and could slightly visualize how the Karma accumulation works and how that final state of mind could lead us to different destinations . And recognized the pain of seeing my loves ones die, suffering of my own body, getting old ,and having to die again and again and again in so many different ways.Some painful events were soo intense that pain was like imprinted into the soul or awareness that carried on for a long time. I didnt understand that. Im lucky enough to have a pretty comfortable and good life in this lifetime maybe thats why i wasnt able to see Dukkha until that exp.I was blinded. Now, The only desire left of me right now is to escape it.I/m not sure if it can be achievable in just one lifetime, but i will try. I will try everything, from meditation , being mindful to 8 fold paths. Thank you for what ue doing . Because of ppl and monks like you, Sasana persists and countless beings including me get to learn the path to escape. I seek refuge in Buddha , Dhamma and Sanga...

    Hello. I wonder if you’ll respond to me. I am a fan of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. Are you a yongey? I am a very fat man. Someone might look at you and look at me, and say that I asked to be supersized. Haha. I am drawn more and more to the peace I experience as I meditate on impermanence, and I as meditate in general. And I feel more peace as I reflect on my gratitude. I believe I’ll never be able to be a monk, because I eat meat. But I love buddhism. I have just realized I love Tibetan buddhism specifically, because of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. My apologies. Do you think the meditation on impermanence before meal time can help an obese man like myself? I may also like to ask you- what does the buddha say about challenging one’s self, and pushing one’s self past their limits?

    • @asimadhikari4534

      @@biggSHNDO Theravada and Mahayana are two big sects of Buddhism. Theravada relies more on the Pali Canon, which is the earliest anthology of Buddhist texts available, while Mahayana has more focus on the Sutras, a later anthology, and more innovations like the Bodhisattva ideal (where you plan to be reborn intentionally to help other beings escape suffering, as opposed to achieving nirvana as an individual). Tibetan Buddhism is a sect of Mahayana. If you are a beginner to Buddhism, this distinction does not really matter. Just follow the teachings of whoever appeals to you and don't get caught up in what tradition is "right" or "wrong". Focus on happiness and being peacefully. The Buddha said that the path is a path of effort, meaning that our efforts are not in vain: that the end of suffering is a reality. However, it is also present-minded, where you accept the present as it is, not as you want it to be. Meditation on impermanence may bring you peace, and it might motivate you to take care of your impermanent body as a way of dealing with old age and sickness. However, it is skillful to pair this with compassion for oneself. You grow out of wisdom and goodwill for oneself; not out of hatred or greed. Just as for not eating meat, it is a natural byproduct of following the slow, gradual path. Make small sustainable changes that increase your contentment day-to-day. With goodwill, Asim

      @@biggSHNDO Hi Shawn, I just saw your message. I know you're already familiar with Tibetan Buddhism, but I think a great place to start exploring is the book Open Heart, Clear Mind by Thubten Chodron. If you want to explore Theravada Buddhism specifically, I would recommend starting off with two sources: 1. Ajahn Brahm: he has a lot of down-to-earth, funny lectures 2. Thanissaro Bhikkhu: he has a lot of free written material on a website called dhammatalks When working with Theravada Buddhism, a lot of sources will focus on streamentry and jhanas. I would strongly recommend not getting too caught up in these sources, especially as a beginner, as these topics lead to obsession and mental suffering. Focus on cultivating generosity, patience, and kindness in one's thoughts, speech, and actions. Focus on contentment and happiness in the current moment, not attainment. Another good reading is the Four Noble Truths by Ajahn Sumedho. Like a lot of Thai Forest monks, his material is available for free online. (For context, Thai Forest is a specific tradition within Theravada Buddhism that tends to emphasize the importance of mindfulness and its monasteries are located in forests. There are a lot of English-speaking resources for this tradition, which is why all the Theravada sources I gave are Thai Forest.) If you have any other questions, feel free to message me. All the best, Asim
